Tuesday, January 24, 2012 GEMS Industry Networking, EXCEL Center at 6:00 pm

The featured speaker at this event was Rachel Hutter. Rachel is director of Resort Development & Integration for Walt Disney World resort. Rachel spoke about her life leading up to her role as an electrical engineer for the Happiest Place on Earth. From pretending to do maintenance on trucks as a little girl to landing her first internship at the age of 19 with General Motors, Rachel shared her personal struggles and growth opportunities along her journey. With a butterfly necklace around her neck, she explained her reasoning for wearing it to this event and retold the story of the man that tried to help the butterfly out a cocoon. "Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we went through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. And we could never fly." Now living her dream working in a STEM field at the Walt Disney World resort, Rachel believes that the "happy ending does not come in the middle of the story." GEMS were inspired after this event and even more motivated to stay strong through the struggle that some times is STEM classes.
